The untimely death of Professor Steve de Gruchy, Head of the School of Religion and Theology (SoRaT) at the University of Kwa Zulu Natal sent a shockwave throughout Pietermaritzburg. Steve was a member of our Governing Council at SMMS.

Steve was internationally renowned as an educationist, theologian, activist, and intellectual, whose vision and leadership helped to build SoRaT into a faculty of excellence.

Under Steve’s passion and drive, SoRat has become one of the premier places of theological and religious study on the African continent. He was always approachable, willing to listen, open to the ideas of others, and committed to cooperation and partnership.
